DTM Editions

DTM Editions is my zine practice. I tend towards two topics: creating joy and surviving academia. The zines dedicated to creating joy examine an array of ordinary topics with an eye for whimsy and an emphasis on small pleasures (Picnics! Walks! Cats in Clothes! Cooking with friends! Quilts! Whimsy!). My university zine series explores hospitality in the classroom, teaching about the climate change, academic precarity, and thinking with art. Each of my zines are hand-drawn and either quite small (4”x5.5”) or tiny (2”x2”).

I have been creating zines and zine-adjacent work since sometime in the 2000s. Most of my earliest projects have been lost in the frequent moves of my early-20s. When living in rural Japan in 2010-2012, I used zines to document my experiences and naive observations. Other times, I’ve turned to zines as a method for sharing hobbies and enthusiasms. As a graduate student and postdoctoral fellow, I created zines to engage students in course content and research methods, while reflecting on pedagogy, academic precarity, and ethics.

Most recently, I have been experimenting my favourite methods—line drawing, tiny handwriting, and a photocopying—to create zines and mail art that focused on joy. I have also been experimenting with sketchnoting and graphic recording as additional paths for exploring the world through images and image making.
